CUBAN ART & ARTISTS
ADRIA BUZON MEJIASBuzon is an artist we promote who has exhibited internationally but predominantly in her native Cuba. Buzon has exhibited in countries such as Egypt, Spain, France and Mexico. A decorated partisan from the Revolutionary War as well as having a previous career as a journalist; It was after these experiences that Buzon decided to explore what she always had a very keen interest in, Art.
Buzon’s practice was always going to be well informed and in some cases rather controversial after previously being a journalist and a partisan. Buzon has dealt with the issues of Cuba’s political system, the ethnic mix in Cuban society and the hopes, dreams and real life problems the Cuban people face today. The final outcomes tend to be of a tribal appearance with the most simple shapes and again, what is a characteristic of Cuban art and Colografia, a bold and vibrant colour scheme. |
JOSE RAMIRO RICARDO FERIARicardo is a hugely respected figure in his native Cuba, being a Professor at Cuban institutes of study has helped him become a hugely experienced and knowledgeable artist. He has had a very thorough and in depth education, learning and expanding his understanding of Fine Art. He has undertaken and delivered many educational programmes of study involved with critical thinking and understanding. Ricardo has also been involved with the teaching of the arts that have involved him to teach drawing, painting and design. He is currently a Director at the Academy of Plastic Arts in Holguin, Cuba.
Jose Ramiro Ricardo Feria’s is another internationally exhibiting artist who we promote; solo and group exhibitions taking place in Europe and Africa. His work seems to revolve around the notions of popular culture and admiration of previous practitioners, such as Matisse and Frida Kahlo, as well as producing a Andy Warhol-esque take on Che Guevara. Ricardo is one of the typical Cuban artists who use a hugely vibrant and bold colour scheme that is reflective upon the decorative nature of Cuban art. |
LUIS ENRIQUES DIAZEnrique is someone who existing established Cuban artists are referring to as the next big thing in the Cuban art world. He has only exhibited within Cuba but he is getting a lot of international interest. Enrique is a upcoming artist who deals with issues such as identity and race with portraits featuring heavily in his work. Delivered in a bold and vibrant colour palette, Enrique has a more grainy quality to his work compared to the other artists we promote, which gives a sense of depth to the printed image. Luis Enrique seems to be able to get a more controlled and detailed images from his Colografia, which is something that other artists have been unable to control to the extent Enrique does.

MAGALYS REYESMagalys Reyes who lives in Holguin, Cuba, is an artist who exhibits internationally as well as in her own country. Reyes has had a successful career so far having solo and group exhibitions in Romania, Egypt and Japan. Reyes has been involved in residencies abroad in countries such as Canada. All these experiences add to her knowledge of contemporary art and inform her own creative practice. The work produced by Reyes incorporates a lot skill and dedication, which you can see from the prints. Her work deals with the themes of the female and nature. There is a mood of self reflection and surrealism in the composition and content of the prints. Reyes uses a palette that references the colours of our physical natural world, shades of brown, green and blue. Reyes seems to be using a dream like state as a vehicle for interpretation to help her deliver the artwork to the audience.
